Welcome to the web site of noted painter, author, and sculptor John Sparacio! For more than 30 years, my provocative paintings have been speaking to art aficionados worldwide, with bold forms and vivid colors. My abstract expressionist images spring forth unbidden, as I let my brush strokes dictate each emotional canvas.

To create my energetic and vividly colored masterpieces, I use a variety of paints and compounds to form multiple layers and textures within each work, each of which makes a particular philosophical statement. Studying my paintings is like reading a stream of consciousness narrative; the surface thoughts fused with subconscious emotions reveal the inner struggles and dualities within each of us in the human experience.

The Messenger of Death   To give you a little insight into the private, philosophical world that he is eager to share with you, we’ve selected one of his most famous images shown at left:

Messenger of Death: Philosophy behind the painting: It was this chilling figure that haunted me for so many years that was the subject of the oil painting. As a teenager, I was visited in a dream by a dark figure that seemed to represent death. At that time in my life, my mind and body were consumed with self-destructive behavior and I turned away from God and anything that seemed good. Spiritually and physically, I was in a very dark and frightening place.

In my weakened state the "Messenger of Death" appeared like a vulture hovering over its prey, waiting for the moment to arrive when my life and soul would finally turn dark and wither toward death so it could swoop in and take me. I woke up to this image I was shocked to realize that it was not a dream but a real apparition before me. The figure shortly disappeared into my closet and like melting ice I began to thaw from the ghostly image I had just seen. I needed to do something to get out of the darkness and grow beyond the lifestyle I was living that led me to deny a connection with my inner spirit and God. I tried many ways of keeping myself free of these dark forces but they persisted until a few years ago, when at the age of forty-three I grew closer to enlightenment and lifted myself beyond my previous state of disillusionment.
